It’s the holidays, you may have had a drink or two in excess
and now feeling the consequences with splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness,
nausea, muscle cramps… Well, while there may be no ‘cure’ to a ‘hangover’, there
are 3 things you can do:-
Drink lots of Water
Indeed, you want to keep your body hydrated. Although nausea
can make it difficult to have any food or drink intake, taking few sips of
water might help your hangover. For a fact, drinking water helps restore necessary fluids and
can help the bloodstream and circulatory system carry nutrients and oxygen to
the tissues and remove the wastes from a night of excessive consumption [1].
Get some carbohydrates!
Our brain needs energy and energy comes from our food
intake. Drinking may lower blood sugar levels, so theoretically some of the
fatigue and headaches of a hangover may be from a brain working without enough
of its main fuel. A good breakfast (toast, honey, juice, pancakes) is a way to
gently nudge levels back to normal [2]. Indeed, having food that is
high in carbs and sugars can help elevate blood sugar and provide some
immediate energy.
Lots of Vitamins and Minerals…
Bouillon soup (a thin, vegetable-based broth) is a good
source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. It's also
easy for a fragile stomach to digest [3]. Vitamins and Minerals help alleviate hangover
symptoms and have liver-protective effects, which may help your body recover
faster.
Bottom line, the strategies include staying hydrated, eating a good breakfast and taking certain supplements, all of which
could reduce your hangover symptoms.
